Orson Welles (no relation to H.G. Wells) produced a radio drama production of H.G. Well's novel. It was broadcasted in the United States on Halloween Eve in 1938. But what was supposed to be an entertaining radio play ended up striking panic in some of the listeners.

The radio play was created for an American audience and was set in Grovers Mill, New Jersey. It was presented as a live news broadcast coming in on location in Grovers Mill where the Martians landed.

Yet many listeners did not tune in at the beginning of the radio play, so when they did tune in, they thought the radio play was a real news broadcast.

It is claimed that some listeners were convinced that America was under attack. But the news stories were sensationalized, and many of the news outlets exaggerated what actually happened

Below is a video that explores how the mass hysteria and panic actually did not happen and how newspaper reports were greatly exaggerated. View the video and answer the questions.

Imagery: Response Assignment to "My Old Newcastle"

You read the memoir by David Adams Richards called "My Old Newcastle" on page 218 of the textbook. The memoir is loaded with many different images. Follow the steps below to complete your on-line assignment for this reading.
  1. Reread the selection and choose five descriptions of imagery that you find particularly powerful. Decide the senses to which the images appeal (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell).
  2. Do a search on www.google.ca for images (change usage rights to help you find images that are copyright friendly or copyright free). You can also use photos for class to search images.
  3. Gather five actual pictures/graphics that you feel convey effectively the images that David Adams Richard created from the five descriptions that you selected
  4. Click here to see an example of only one slide for this assignment (remember, you are doing five)
  5. Using Microsoft PowerPoint (or Google Slides), copy each image and the direct link from the website where you obtained the image (in other words, give credit)
  6. Type in the descriptive quote from the memoir, and also include the sense(s) to which the image appeals and make sure you also have the web address link for the image
  7. Create a title page that includes your name, a title and the date
  8. Look over the assignment rubric (see below) to make sure you have included everything and consider what mark you think you should get
  9. Share your work through with your teacher (Google: allancarterspace@gmail.com Microsoft: allan.carter@nbed.nb.ca)
Assignment Rubric
  • Each description selected is a solid and powerful example that strongly appeals to at least one sense.
  • Each image effectively represents the description.
  • The students has included the sense(s) related to the description and image.
  • The source for each image is included with the link (NOT the Google search results link).
  • Each image appears to be copyright friendly or copyright free.

Novel Study: Post Reading Activity (Book Cover) The Americans Are Coming

INTRODUCTION: BOOK COVER ACTIVITY

You have completed the novel and now the publisher has asked you to come up with a revised cover for the novel for a new edition they are printing next year.

They want a cover that will appeal to young people for high school study and they need your help.

BOOK COVER ELEMENTS

You will design a new novel cover that will include the following elements:
  • One (possibly more) dominant image (consider using your own photo). You can draw or take a photo of your own image which you can import to the layout software you will use. Consider an image that captures on of the major themes of the novel. If you do use another photo it must be copyright friendly or copyright free.
  • The author's name
  • The name of the book
  • Your name in small print in the bottom left hand corner: Cover design by (your name)
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. In designing your cover, consider what important events happen in the novel and what themes were explored. What image(s) could possibly help represent or symbolize one or more of those events and themes.
  2. Remember, if you use images that are not your own, they have to be copyright friendly or copyright free. If you are not sure how to find images that are copyright friendly or copyright free, check with another student or your teacher. Make sure to indicate to your teacher where you got the image and save the direct link to the image. This is a good site to use to search for images for class assignments.
  3. You can use the two novel covers of the book that we have in class as examples and as a guide.
  4. You can use the software, Canva to complete the design. Or, you can also design your own cover by hand if you like to draw and design in a non-digital format. Make sure to use blank paper, not lined.
  5. Click here to access Canva and create an account using your nbss.nbed.nb.ca email.
  6. There is an example that you can look at that was completed in Canva. Click here to see an example for the assignment.
  7. When you have completed your book cover in Canva, show it to some other students for feedback, then make final revisions.
  8. Let your teacher know when the book cover is complete, and make sure you share it for final assessment
  9. Click here and complete the online response activity arguing why you think your book cover should be the one the book publisher selects.
FINAL ASSESSMENT
  • The final product shows strong signs of creativity and overall effort.
  • The cover design effectively helps someone determine what the novel might be about.
  • The overall design of the novel cover would most likely appeal to a lot of younger people.
  • The image(s) is a relevant choice and is the creator's or is copyright friendly/free.
  • There are no spelling mistakes and all the elements are included.
  • The student has completed the reflection activity and there is evidence of much thought and effort.
