Storyboarding the How-to Video

CLICK HERE to access and make a copy of the storyboard/script template and use it to map out how you will produce your video. Keep in mind the following elements as you storyboard and create the script:
  • The title (headline) and introduction
  • Step by step instructions (NOTE: Each instruction will probably be a different video shot)
  • A list of materials and/or supplies (if applicable)
  • Cautions or warnings (and/or additional hints or tips)
  • Conclusion
  • Credits and cite any sources (if any were used)
CLICK HERE to also make a copy of the video shot handout that you can use as a reference when completing your storyboard/script.
Most of the video shots you will use will probably be medium shots at eye level, but consider when you will need closeups or extreme closeups as well as different angles (high and low).

RUBRIC

Below is the rubric that will be used for peer assessment as well as final evaluation. It is quite similar to the rubric used for the how-to written articles.
  • The headline and introduction is effective in catching your attention and encouraging you to view more.
  • The instructions are clear and easy to understand. The video provides clear voiceover and text to make it easier for the viewer to follow along.
  • The camera shots/transitions are well executed and show evidence of good planning and editing.
  • Any other necessary elements are also included, such as hints, tips, cautions, warnings and sources.
  • The storyboard/script includes clear direction for each camera shot and there is evidence of solid planning and effort.

The How-to Video Structure

NOTE: Make sure you have completed the previous activity "Which How-to Article?" before starting this activity

Now that you have decided on your topic, the next step is to consider the format of the how-to video.

The good news is that most of your "script" is already completed since you have the written how-to article for your topic - either your own or another student's on your team.

But before you start storyboarding and planning, it would be good to look at some examples of how-to videos and consider the structure.

NOTE: If you are working in a pair or teams, you can do this activity together, or you can do it individually. Just make sure to include everyone's name on the form before you submit it if you decide to do it together.

CLICK HERE to access the form along with the instructions and suggested resources.

Which How-to Article?

Now that you have finished your how-to article and have received peer assessment and probably final feedback and evaluation, you will start the process of planning and producing a how-to video.

If you are working alone, you can use your own how-to article. If you are working in pairs or small teams, you will have to choose one of the how-to articles that was written in your pair or team.

CLICK HERE and use this form as an initial planning guide and make sure to submit it before the end of class.

Once you have complete this step, you will move on to the next activity where you will explore the how to video structure and how to plan the creation of your own video.
