Orson Welles (no relation to H.G. Wells) produced a radio drama production of H.G. Well's novel. It was broadcasted in the United States on Halloween Eve in 1938. But what was supposed to be an entertaining radio play ended up striking panic in some of the listeners.

The radio play was created for an American audience and was set in Grovers Mill, New Jersey. It was presented as a live news broadcast coming in on location in Grovers Mill where the Martians landed.

Yet many listeners did not tune in at the beginning of the radio play, so when they did tune in, they thought the radio play was a real news broadcast.

It is claimed that some listeners were convinced that America was under attack. But the news stories were sensationalized, and many of the news outlets exaggerated what actually happened

Below is a video that explores how the mass hysteria and panic actually did not happen and how newspaper reports were greatly exaggerated. View the video and answer the questions.
